Former beauty queen collapses and dies at just 25

Former beauty queen Jessica Whalley has been named as the woman who died at ex-English soccer star Michael Owen’s stables.

The 25-year-old worked at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, northwestern England, as a transport manager.

Reportedly, Jessica felt ill at around 8:50am, and emergency services raced to attend to her in the racing yard, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have stated that the tragic incident is not being treated as suspicious, explaining with their own statement that “at around 8.50am today, police were made aware that a 25-year-old woman had collapsed at a stables on Old Coach Road, Malpas.

"Emergency services attended the location and, despite the best efforts of all those involved, the woman sadly died at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and her next of kin have been informed. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Michael Owen is said by The Sun to have been emotional in the wake of the loss, with one woman sharing on Facebook that it was “so sad seeing him and all his staff in tears today … after such a shock to them … [at] such a young age.

"No health problems[,] 25 is no age ... life really is too short for we never really know how long we have ... thoughts go out to her family and friends."

The National Association of Racing Staff CEO George McGrath had kind words for the late Jessica as well when he explained that she “was a much loved and respected member of the racing community and taken from us at much too early in age."

Manor Farm Stables later released a statement, and tribute to their “valued member”, writing that “it is with deep sadness that we have to announce that a much-valued member of our team died at work this morning.

"The family have been informed and both the family and the team at Manor House request privacy at this time."

Jessica - or ‘Jess’ to her friends - has been remembered as a hard worker, a respected member of the racing community, and a “much loved” friend. But her professional history isn’t limited to the stables, as the young woman once found passion in the beauty circuit.

In 2019, Jessica had the honour of representing the United Kingdom in the Miss Tourism Universe pageant, an event that took place in Beirut and aired on MTV. And in the competition, Jessica made it to the final ten.

And it was one of Jess’s friends who shared the final picture ever taken of Jessica, taken a mere three days before, writing alongside the picture that it was “heartbreaking to hear Jess lost her life today at the tender age of 25.

“She was riding out doing what she loved. We had so many great times working in Dubai.

“May she rest in peace.”

Images: Facebook

Airline responds to "fat-shaming" onboard comments

Dr Sydney Watson – a US-based Australian journalist and political commentator – took to Twitter on October 11 to complain about being sat between two obese people on an American Airlines flight.

Her mid-flight comments caused an immediate furore as she posted that “I am currently - literally - WEDGED between two OBESE people on my flight,” along with a photo of her personal space being invaded.

“This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. If fat people want to be fat, fine. But it is something else entirely when I'm stuck between you, with your arm rolls on my body, for 3 hours.

“I don't care if this is mean. My entire body is currently being touched against my wishes. I can't even put the arm rests down on either side because there's no f***ing room.

“I'm sick of acting like fatness to this extent is normal. Let me assure you, it is not.

“If you need a seat belt extender, you are TOO FAT TO BE ON A PLANE.

“Buy two seats or don't fly.”

I am currently - literally - WEDGED between two OBESE people on my flight.

This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. We're sorry you were uncomfortable on your flight.”

This however was not enough for Dr Watson who eventually found out that “what happened to me went against American Airlines own policies regarding overweight passengers.”

A few days later after her initial flight, an American Airlines worker got in contact with Dr Watson apologising for the inconvenience and offered her a $150 Trip Credit.

“I'd rather take the $150 American Airlines offered me as a refund and give it to someone who needs a PT or a gym membership,” she tweeted in response.

Still furious at what occurred on the flight, Dr Watson said she has no regrets over being in the news for fat shaming.

“I'm not sorry. I meant everything I said. Justifying obesity is NOT OKAY,” she said.

“And, rock on to anyone trying to lose weight and change their lives. I believe in you.”

Images: Twitter/Instagram

How to stay in Carrie Bradshaw's apartment from Sex and the City

It’s the ultimate experience for fans of Sex and the City.

A stunning recreation of the Brownstone New York apartment that the show’s Carrie Bradshaw character lived in is being put up for rent by Airbnb.

Sarah Jessica Parker herself played a role in designing it and will be "virtually" welcoming guests when they arrive.

“The Carrie Bradshaw character is near and dear to my heart, and revisiting her world for the continuation of the Sex and the City story has been such a joy,” said SJP.

Carrie’s brownstone apartment was central to the series and its décor has now been painstakingly recreated by Parker, Airbnb, and a small New York-based production team.

The character’s famous walk-in wardrobe, her writing desk and her bedroom appear almost exactly as they did in the cult series.

Replicas of key props from the original apartment are dotted throughout, such as circa-2000 cordless phone and a blocky black laptop, like the one Carrie used to labour over her writing.

After enjoying a virtual greeting from the actress upon check-in, Airbnb says the guests can sip on cosmopolitans – reminiscent of the many cocktail-laden scenes from the series.

A styling session and a photoshoot will also be included in the experience. Guests will get the chance to play dress-up in a recreation of Carrie’s closet, which has been filled with duplicates of some of the iconic looks from the series.

This includes a model of the tutu Carrie wears in the show’s opening credits, which is one of the most famous looks curated by the show’s costume designer Patricia Field. Outfits from Carrie’s favourite fashion designers also line the closet, as well as – of course – rows and rows of shoes.

“I’m excited for our audience to experience Carrie’s New York like never before and walk in her shoes, quite literally, for the first time," Parker said.

Guests will also be invited to leave the apartment and explore Manhattan, traipsing the same streets as Carrie and her entourage would have done.

Brunch in Chelsea is part of the experience, which Airbnb describes as a ‘meal where many conversations took place that deepened Carrie’s friendships with the girls’.

In Sex and the City, the exterior shots of Carrie's apartment showed 64 and 66 Perry Street in Manhattan's West Village. Meanwhile, the interior scenes were captured in Silvercup Studios in Queens.

For the recreation, Airbnb used a different New York apartment that had a similar floorplan to that of Carrie's flat.

The new Airbnb was designed in honour of next month's premiere of And Just Like That..., a 10-episode revival of Sex and the City that will air on HBO Max and Sky Comedy.

Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon will reprise their roles in the series, but Kim Cattrall - who played publicity dynamo Samantha Jones - declined to take part.

The Airbnb project, which was a collaboration between Airbnb and Warner Bros Consumer Products, also marks 23 years since fans were first introduced to the show.

Parker will host two one-night stays for up to two guests each on November 12 and 14 for just $23 a night.

First look at Sex and the City reboot

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have returned for the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That.

The next chapter of the beloved story of four friends in New York follows “Carrie” (Parker), “Miranda” (Nixon), and “Charlotte” (Davis) as “they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”

Production has officially begun on the series, with an official photo being released over the weekend.

And Just Like That will stream on Binge later this year.

The cast includes Sara Ramirez, Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson and Evan Handler.

Kim Cattrall, who played publicist Samantha Jones, will not be returning.

HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told TVLine back in February the show “is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.”

He explained to the outlet, “Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life … They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”

The four women played their respective characters for six seasons and two movies from 1998 until as recently as 2010.

Why words for single women have changed through time

In a recent interview with Vogue, actress Emma Watson opened up about being a single 30-year-old woman. Instead of calling herself single, however, she used the word “self-partnered.”

I’ve studied and written about the history of single women, and this is the first time I am aware of “self-partnered” being used. We’ll see if it catches on, but if it does, it will join the ever-growing list of words used to describe single women of a certain age.

Women who were once called spinsters eventually started being called old maids. In 17th-century New England, there were also words like “thornback” – a sea skate covered with thorny spines – used to describe single women older than 25.

Attitudes toward single women have repeatedly shifted – and part of that attitude shift is reflected in the names given to unwed women.

The rise of the ‘singlewoman’

Before the 17th century, women who weren’t married were called maids, virgins or “puella,” the Latin word for “girl.” These words emphasized youth and chastity, and they presumed that women would only be single for a small portion of their life – a period of “pre-marriage.”

But by the 17th century, new terms, such as “spinster” and “singlewoman,” emerged.

What changed? The numbers of unwed women – or women who simply never married – started to grow.

In the 1960s, demographer John Hajnal identified the “Northwestern European Marriage Pattern,” in which people in northwestern European countries such as England started marrying late – in their 30s and even 40s. A significant proportion of the populace didn’t marry at all. In this region of Europe, it was the norm for married couples to start a new household when they married, which required accumulating a certain amount of wealth. Like today, young men and women worked and saved money before moving into a new home, a process that often delayed marriage. If marriage were delayed too long – or if people couldn’t accumulate enough wealth – they might not marry at all.

Now terms were needed for adult single women who might never marry. The term spinster transitioned from describing an occupation that employed many women – a spinner of wool – to a legal term for an independent, unmarried woman.

Single women made up, on average, 30% of the adult female population in early modern England. My own research on the town of Southampton found that in 1698, 34.2% of women over 18 were single, another 18.5% were widowed, and less than half, or 47.3%, were married.

Many of us assume that past societies were more traditional than our own, with marriage more common. But my work shows that in 17th-century England, at any given time, more women were unmarried than married. It was a normal part of the era’s life and culture.

The pejorative ‘old maid’

In the late 1690s, the term old maid became common. The expression emphasizes the paradox of being old and yet still virginal and unmarried. It wasn’t the only term that was tried out; the era’s literature also poked fun at “superannuated virgins.” But because “old maid” trips off the tongue a little easier, it’s the one that stuck.

The undertones of this new word were decidedly critical.

“A Satyr upon Old Maids,” an anonymously written 1713 pamphlet, referred to never-married women as “odious,” “impure” and repugnant. Another common trope was that old maids would be punished for not marrying by “leading apes in hell.”

At what point did a young, single woman become an old maid? There was a definitive line: In the 17th century, it was a woman in her mid-20s.

For instance, the single poet Jane Barker wrote in her 1688 poem, “A Virgin Life,” that she hoped she could remain “Fearless of twenty-five and all its train, / Of slights or scorns, or being called Old Maid.”

These negative terms came about as the numbers of single women continued to climb and marriage rates dropped. In the 1690s and early 1700s, English authorities became so worried about population decline that the government levied a Marriage Duty Tax, requiring bachelors, widowers and some single women of means to pay what amounted to a fine for not being married.

Still uneasy about being single

Today in the U.S., the median first age at marriage for women is 28. For men, it’s 30.

What we’re experiencing now isn’t a historical first; instead, we’ve essentially returned to a marriage pattern that was common 300 years ago. From the 18th century up until the mid-20th century, the average age at first marriage dropped to a low of age 20 for women and age 22 for men. Then it began to rise again.

There’s a reason Vogue was asking Watson about her single status as she approached 30. To many, age 30 is a milestone for women – the moment when, if they haven’t already, they’re supposed to go from being footloose and fancy-free to thinking about marriage, a family and a mortgage.

Even if you’re a wealthy and famous woman, you can’t escape this cultural expectation. Male celebrities don’t seem to be questioned about being single and 30.

While no one would call Watson a spinster or old maid today, she nonetheless feels compelled to create a new term for her status: “self-partnered.” In what some have dubbed the “age of self-care,” perhaps this term is no surprise. It seems to say, I’m focused on myself and my own goals and needs. I don’t need to focus on another person, whether it’s a partner or a child.

To me, though, it’s ironic that the term “self-partnered” seems to elevate coupledom. Spinster, singlewoman or singleton: None of those terms openly refers to an absent partner. But self-partnered evokes a missing better half.

It says something about our culture and gender expectations that despite her status and power, a woman like Watson still feels uncomfortable simply calling herself single.<!-- End of code. You and your partner are going to change. It seems so silly, but I think you’re very lucky if you like the person. I still just really like him. Waiting for a child. I read on the subway,” she says. “On the set, I have a book hidden under a dress or under a couch. For me reading it's like disappearing. It transports me. And when I get into bed, I watch TV. I love TV. I love the news. It drives me bananas. I love watching Rachel Maddow. I love House Hunters International. After they went their separate ways in 2009, the Pulitzer Prize winner said of their "tumultuous” three-decade relationship.

"I mean, we have long periods of relative calm," Shepard told The Guardian in 2010. "We're definitely an incredible match. But, you know, not without fireworks ... although at this point, you know, she's the only woman I could live with. Who could live with me! What other woman would put up with me? ... I'd never met anybody like her. She was astounding. Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon reveal sad truth about ageing in Hollywood

At 67 and 70 respectively, actresses Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are in the prime of the career. In their latest TV series Feud, Lange stars as ageing screen legend Joan Crawford alongside Susan Sarandon as Crawford’s bitter rival, Bette Davis.

But both successful women recognise that ageing, especially if you’re a woman, in Hollywood can spell the end of your career.

“Women are viewed as a commodity more so than male actors,” Lange tells PEOPLE. “At a certain age women are no longer considered a viable or a valuable part of the community – even if that’s when they may feel like they’re at the top of their game. And that’s not just in Hollywood.”

Sarandon says of the female stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, “All of those gals who had these amazing parts found themselves high and dry later when they were older because there weren’t that many people who were writing them.

“There are so many tragic stories of women who were so beautiful and couldn’t figure out a way to age within the system.”

Feud producer Ryan Murphy believes it’s important to tell stories that celebrate women of all ages, including older women.

“I think if Joan and Bette were alive, they would raise a glass to Jessica and Susan,” he says. “Bette and Joan have been frozen in amber in our culture for a long time as characters and I think what we worked so hard at doing was painting full, complete portraits of these women. Their story deserved to be told in that way.”
